MATERIALS

Plant-Based Reinforcement. Structural Intent.

Tide & Timber Boards began as a material project.

We work with plant-based agave fibre as part of a composite construction approach designed to reduce reliance on conventional foam builds, while maintaining the structural requirements of a premium paddle board.

This page summarises the materials used and the thinking behind them.

AGAVE FIBRE

Agave fibre is derived from a resilient plant cultivated for industrial fibre applications.

The material is selected for its strength characteristics, renewable origin, and suitability within a durability-led build approach.

Our focus is sustainability not novelty.

It is functional material substitution with long-term advantages.

COMPOSITE BUILD

The board structure utilises a chambered core to provide buoyancy, manoeuvrability and long-term integrity.

Every sisal agave pole is selected for structural contribution rather than excess.

The goal is consistent performance over time, and a board designed to remain in use.

COMPARED TO CONVENTIONAL CONSTRUCTION

Many conventional paddle boards use petroleum-derived foam cores and reinforcement systems designed primarily for efficient mass production.

A plant-based fibre core shifts that foundation.

It changes what the board is built from at the core level, and reframes durability, repairability, and material responsibility as part of the product design process rather than an afterthought.

CLARITY

What This Material Choice Enables

Using plant-based fibre as part of the core and reinforcement strategy enables:

• Reduced dependence on conventional petroleum-based core materials

• A construction approach designed for longevity

• A material story that begins with renewable inputs

• Manufacturing offcuts are repurposed rather than disregarded as petrochemical toxic waste.
